What is Music Therapy?
Music therapy is an evidence based practice in which music is used to support positive change in other goal areas. Music therapy is provided by a board certified professional who is credentialed through the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT). Below are a few goal areas that music therapy can address. Music therapy has many more benefits including pain reduction, supporting cognitive function, and improving overall quality of life. But most of all, music is fun!
Emotional Regulation
Learning how to self-regulate emotional responses is an integral skill for all ages. Music can aid self expression by teaching regulation strategies and coping mechanisms in a fun and creative way.
Communication and Social skills
Music is an inherently social activity. Playing music in a group setting allows individuals to explore their own creativity while simultaneously learning how to coexist with others and communicate their own needs. Musical elements like rhythm and melody also support speech development.
Motor function
Whether developing new motor skills or rehabilitating old ones, music can be a powerful tool for building the connection between the brain and the body. Rhythm acts as a neurological agent, while playing instruments provides a motivating way to practice gross and fine motor skills.
